The value of a low cost, high performance GA HUD is its ability to increase flight safety and operational efficiency during the critical phases of takeoff, approach, and landing, by displaying guidance cues to the pilot while maintaining the pilot’s outside awareness. During these critical phases of flight, the pilot is able to maintain outside visual scanning of the external scene while receiving necessary flight parameters. In addition, by combining the capabilities of the HUD with emerging low cost enhanced vision sensors, the pilot will also acquire visibility of the airport from a greater distance when flying in limited visibility conditions.
